Why do we do what we do?
The foundation of our brand is rooted in authenticity. Authenticity in self, authenticity in purpose and authenticity in all of life’s expression. Authenticity exams the relationship of the individual within the world and the complex play together and against each other. It is a play on the self versus the world, the present versus the future or the past versus reality and their effects on each other.
Authenticity is the level to which a person’s actions are aligned with his or her values and desires, despite external pressures to social conventionalism.
In sustainability, society is forced to examine its past and how it has brought them to their present. The effects of its actions take center stage for all to view. They are pushed to examine their past and present actions and their effects on the world and society around them. Through sustainability, we shift from the world of our past, with no morals and purpose and we create meaning. Sustainability is taking full responsibility for our life, choices and actions and authenticity is just that.
All things come full circle, beginning where they ended. Circularity focuses on resource cycles, waste not, and want not. It begins with design then moving into the development of products that take into consideration the products end of life. New products are made from waste, instead of raw materials, lowering environmental impact. Our denim is designed to be recyclable and made with as many recycled products as possible. Our goal is to become100% circular.
We have removed all the metal rivets and have designed custom removable shanks (a.k.a buttons) which are constructed with 100% recycled copper and recycled zinc alloy. The end user can remove the shank, recycle or up-cycle it (along with the fabric). We have also created custom sunglass and spec holders for each jean, made from 100% recycled copper. Our future is bright, as I am sure yours is as well.
To lower our environmental impact, we have removed all excess labels. All of our labels and product information are incorporated into each design, directly being printed on each jean. We have selected water-based paints that are environmentally friendly.
Blacks, endless shades of blacks, black denim is the inspiration for our brand. Do not worry, there will be some prolific indigo denims, along with beautiful natural Ecru jeans as well. However, being born in Black, we wanted to make Black the new Green. We exclusively use sustainable Italian chemicals, which are developed specifically for use on denim. The process for bleaching and stone washing black denim has never been sustainable. Through the use of this chemical, we are able to save water from processing times, through lower water temperatures and time savings. This process reduces the amount of non environmentally friendly chemicals, saves energy, preserves the fabric integrity and improves the hand feel of each jean. For our Indigo jeans, we use a revolutionary chemical, which replaces the use the very environmentally harmful Potassium Permanganate through Ozone activation. Saving the integrity of the fabric, it is GOTS and OKEO Tex Certified. We are able to lighten denim, without damaging our Eco system.
Remedy exclusively incorporates fabrics from sustainable mills in Italy and Turkey. Being the most important element of our story, we are very strategic in selecting the best partners for our ideology. Without their innovations and support, we would be unable to conceive our goals. We are forever grateful to them. Our mills support the Life Cycle Assessment as a tool for designing and developing sustainability. By using approximately 20% recycled content in denim, we can save an estimated 450 to 750 liters of water (120-200 gallons), per jean. By using only 20% recycled cotton in cotton blends, we can potentially save a minimum of 450 million liters (120 million gallons) of water per jean. The use of organic cotton can lead to a 43% reduction on global warming, 15% reduction on freshwater use, 77% reduction on abiotic depletion, 26% on eutrophication and 42% on land use.
